The highly-anticipated last leg of the 2nd Annual Freshmen Dentistry Students? Career Orientation Forum entitled ?360° Total Perspective Forum for First Year Dentistry Students? became even more anticipated because the said event was postponed for over a week due to the declaration of its original scheduled date as a holiday. When it finally pushed through on Thursday, August 13, 2009, one can?t help but feel the energy building up inside the AVR of the Fatima University Medical Center. While the Pre-dentistry and 1st Year Dental Proper students of the Our Lady of Fatima University (OLFU) Valenzuela campus awaited their Lagro campus counterparts, Ms. Rodalyn Guimbuayan (Clinicians? Club Asst. Secretary) indulged the audience with a song number. A Question-and-Answer (Q&A) portion ensued after a few minutes.

Questions pertaining to our sponsor, its products, the activity for that morning and facts only students of the college would know were asked. Colgate products were given away to the lucky winners. Nearing the end of the Q&A, our brothers and sisters from Lagro filed into the room. A volunteer from their group was asked, "How does it feel to be here today?" His reply, which received an "Awww?" and applause from the audience, was, to translate, "I?m happy because we just got here, yet you accepted and welcomed us."

With Ms. Melissa Urbano (Clinicians? Club PRO) and Mr. Mark Narboneta (Philippine Dental Students? Association ? Fatima Chapter Ways and Means Officer) as emcees, the official program began with, what I hope was, an encouraging Welcome Message from yours truly as Clinicians? Club President, followed by another message from Ms. Jac Saez-Abadia (Program Manager for Dental Schools and Community Programs of Colgate-Palmolive Philippines, Inc.). Miss Saez-Abadia spoke of the role of Colgate as a true partner of dental professionals and dental students in promoting oral health in the Philippines and how Colgate, through its numerous projects, including the scholarship it grants deserving students, encourages future dental professionals towards their goal in serving their fellowmen.

Another fine lady in the person of Dr. Sharon Isidro-Alvarez, a 1st placer of the Dental Licensure Examinations and one of the first batch of graduates of OLFU College of Dentistry, was requested to speak before the Freshmen in order to inspire them. Dr. Isidro-Alvarez highlighted her most challenging, yet happiest, moments as a Dental student in the College. She spoke of the bad times and the good times, and how, not her high school, but her college days were the most memorable of her life.

Ms. Ma. Stephanie de Leon (Clinicians? Club Secretary) had the honor to introduce our very own Dean Arturo P. de Leon who was our main speaker for the day. Dean de Leon?s lecture entitled ?LILAC ? Live It Like A Calling? gave emphasis on the specific attitude, skills and abilities needed to become a dentist. His very riveting presentation included a discussion on the uniqueness of Dentistry among other courses and professions, wherein it is both a science and an art. Dentists are architects, as well as engineers. He also pointed out that Dentistry is actually a specialization of Medicine, not a subordinate field; therefore, when a dentist is asked what his profession is, he should respond that, ?I am not just a doctor, I?m a dentist.? Dr. de Leon even livened up the discussion with very thought-provoking images and pmnemonics that surely left a lasting impression on the captivated audience.

An Open Forum followed Dean de Leon?s lecture, giving the participants an opportunity to ask questions regarding the profession. The Dean was very accommodating in answering every question, thereby enlightening the audience even further and encouraging this new batch of ?champions? to take on the challenges of Dentistry. Before the end of the program both Ms. Guimbuayan and Ms. Charmea Paquio (Clinic I clinician) sang inspirational songs and some Clinic I level clinicians graced us with a very entertaining dance number.

In his Closing Remarks, Mr. Art Kevin de Leon (PDSA-Fatima President) recounted how he enjoyed playing with the instruments in his parents? clinic, not knowing the purpose of each item he was toying with. Now, he has a new appreciation for them because of this seminar where he realized that Dentistry is such a noble profession. He was compelled to challenge his fellow Dentistry students, ?So, when there is pain and suffering, I, Art Kevin J. de Leon will be there. The question is ? will you be there?? Commitment Signing by the participants was also led by Mr. de Leon. This, with very inspiring music and photo presentations in the background, was the participants? chance to express in words their desire to continue pursuing the course and become dental professionals.

To solidify their commitment, they were endowed with button pins designed by our beloved Dean Arturo de Leon which read, ?Magiging Tapat na Dentista, Pangakong Dapat Asahan.? The Forum culminated with the distribution of Certificates of Participation, Colgate gift packs and meals.

We?d like to thank our generous sponsor, Colgate, for partnering with the Philippine Association of Dental Colleges (PADC) in organizing this very meaningful event.
