The orientation forum exemplified various ideas, viewpoints and motivations that can help students as they go along their Dentistry course. It inspired everyone to accomplish and make every effort count towards finishing the course. The orientation forum aims to encourage and inspire students to complete the course and provide various options where students can excel in the field of Dentistry - be it in practice, academe, public health, corporate or the private sector. Distinguished guest speakers were invited to bestow upon their exceptional experiences of reaching their goals & aspirations in the profession.
One of the speakers was Dr. Hermogenes P. Villareal, is one of the distinguished sons of the University of the East. He was the recipient of 'Most Outstanding Alumnus' by his Alma Mater University of the East College of Dentistry after having achieved so much as a specialist in the fields of Oral Surgery, Oral Implantology, Periodontology and General Dentistry. He delivered his "360º Total Perspective, Full Circle of a Career in Dentistry" speech by sharing his own story. From his roots to how he started, worked hard, strived and faced the challenges along the way and how he aspired and dreamt of being successful someday. His speech brought so much admiration that it enabled students to understand the necessary points that are needed as they go on in this field. To stay inspired that sooner or later they can also achieve what he has achieved for 'what the mind conceives, the body can achieve'. This passion of Dr. Villareal also inspired his three children to become dentists and specialists in the field that he loves.
The forum also aimed to promote camaraderie between dental students from different schools. The University of the East prepared a game for everyone called "Human Bingo". Everyone interacted with one another as the game progressed and in the end, four winners were declared. Musical band "Jaba" played during the intermission immediately after the game. Students sang along with the band in high spirits as the band played a musical medley.
In the succeeding sessions, speaker Dr. Arturo P. De Leon, special adviser of PADC and Dean of the College of Dentistry in Our Lady of Fatima University, gave a broader 360º vision about the field of Dentistry. He has literally done the rounds in the professional practice of dentistry, academe, corporate and even in the Armed Forces in various capacities. He lives and breathes Dentistry as a calling. The topic of his speech, "Dentistry as a Profession - Live It Like a Calling (Lilac as the color of Dentistry)" He defined Dentistry as a life-long process, a continuous learning experience, for it is not just about the value or distinction of your name and title but also of balance in knowledge, skills and attitude which is acquired and not inherent. Dentistry is for the pursuit of excellence, reaching out to people and towards bringing harmony and discipline. Dr. De Leon, the next speaker, further expounded on being in the service profession. He made us appreciate the happiness and fulfillment that is brought about by being a dentist. It is not only because of the smiles that we can give to people but being in 'service to others'. He ended with this inspiring adage" "Be the master of your career! Be of service! Be a dentist!"
Alexis S. Go from the University of the East delivered a very inspiring Closing Remark and encouraged everyone to stand by our pledge of continuing the course as she headed in the signing of the banner which says: "Magiging Tapat akong Dentista, Pangakong Dapat Asahan". Everyone who took part in this wonderful event enjoyed this day of learning, experiences, and aspirations.
